Generalization and preconceptions

It is neither a shame nor an exaggeration that we are not perfect human beings and we will not even find one in our circle of friends, which is completely natural, since our world influences our inner qualities and decisions along an inconceivable number of forces and variables.

This common proverb clearly shows that our thinking very often ignores sanity and objectivity. Positive and negative preconceptions can influence our decisions, often with a rather poor degree of effectiveness. The bad news is that security personnel at checkpoints are not exempt from this either. The tendency to generalize is not to be condemned, as it is a fundamental evolutionary psychological mechanism that regulates the human race to a great extent for success, and in many cases generalization can be more correctly called ‘common truth’. However, when what is generally true is not true in a given situation, it can lead to a series of serious personal conflicts.
